1970 Kentucky Derby
Despite the hostile attitude toward female jockeys, Crump rode through it all, and after only a year of riding professionally she got the opportunity to ride in the Kentucky Derby.
On May 2, 1970, Crump made women's sports history by riding in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, a Triple Crown event and one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.
She finished 15th out of 17. Although she didn't win the race, competing in the race opened the doors for other women to compete in the sport of horse racing.
